Papers of the Lewis family. [manuscript], 1835-1866.

The collection consists chiefly of Civil War letters from George Samuel Lewis to his family in Lexington, Va. He discusses life in camp; recuperating in a hospital; trading with the Yankees; deserters; poor rations; an engagement at Jacob's Ford; picket duty; capture by the Yankees, May 12, 1864; and imprisonment at Point Lookout and Elmira. Letters from C. Dickson and Charles S. Greenleaf report his death. Two letters from his brother, John David Lewis, mention a visit from his father, camp life and skirmishing. Memoranda, journal entries and documents concerning the Reverend Reuben Lewis, a Presbyterian minister, include a list of marriages performed and accounts; a call from the Church of Fairmont; an account for the tuition of indigent children in Craig County; a memorandum book recording church services and other religious activities; an exegesis regarding [Infant Baptism?]; and some genealogical information on the Lewis family.
